   Résumé
   Un jeune cadre attaqué dans la rue de Los Angeles par des voyous est sauvé par un brave chauffeur noir. Ils deviennent amis. La femme du cadre adopte un enfant abandonné dans la rue. Le Noir trouve une âme sœur. Un cinéaste, spécialisé dans la violence, comprend qu'il fait fausse route…
   Commentaire
   Toutes ces petites histoires fonctionnent simultanément. Kasdan leur attribue une signification unanimiste. Il situe son patchwork dans la ville de Los Angeles qu'il connaît bien: ville opulente, mais ville sinistre, angoissante, en pleine décadence, comme l'ensemble du pays. Comment se satisfaire de ce siècle inhumain, insensé, égoïste? Le scénario émet de timides hypothèses en s'efforçant de croire que la compréhension, la générosité, l'altruisme, toutes vertus traditionnelles et surannées, pourraient bien faire pièce au désordre établi. Il chante ce couplet d'espérance avec chaleur, conviction et talent.
